On November 7, 2011, “Launching Ceremony of 2012 (London) Olympic Fine Arts” was held in the Great Hall of the People in Beijing.
“2012 (London) Olympic Fine Arts”, chartered by the International Olympic Committee and approved by the Ministry of Culture of the People's Republic of China, is a high-caliber cultural event with international influence co-sponsored by China Society for the Promotion of Cultural and Art Development and Beijing Olympic Culture Association. It is one of the major events to implement the spirit of the 16th Plenary Session of the 17th CPC Central Committee and promote China's cultural development and prosperity as well as the greater exposure of the Chinese culture in the world. The event is endorsed by the support of Chinese International Culture Association, UK London Organizing Committee of Olympic Games and Paralympic Games (LOCOG), Greater London Authority (GLA), Chinese Artists Association, National Museum of China and many other organizations and institutions. Works of “2012 (London) Olympic Fine Arts” will be exhibited from August 1 to 7, 2012 in London. 500 Chinese traditional paintings, oil paintings, mixed media paintings created by world-renowned artists from China, UK and other countries and regions will be on display. The exhibition aims at delivering on the theme of “Thames • Great Wall - The World in Arms” featuring wide participation from various countries, compatibility of creation subjects, plurality of artistic styles and high-profile in terms of exhibition scale.
The International Olympic Sports and Art Contest started in the fifth Stockholm Olympic Games, Sweden in 1912. Since then, the International Olympic Sports and Art Contest was held in the same year of each Olympic Games till the 1948 London Olympics.
During 2008 Beijing Olympics, China Society for the Promotion of Cultural and Art Development and Beijing Olympic Culture Association successfully held the “2008 Olympic Fine Arts”. This event was highly acclaimed by BOCOG and international artists as a significant move in shaping the image of a "Cultural China" in the current global context.
